Yield

Yield

You must give way to traffic on the major road ahead and only proceed when it is safe.

Regulatory Traffic Signs

What should you do?

Slow down on approach, be ready to stop at the broken yield line, and enter only when there is a safe gap without forcing other road users to brake.

How to recognise it

A downward-pointing white triangle with a red border and the word YIELD in black.

Common confusion

A Yield sign does not require you to stop if the way is clear, whereas a Stop sign always does; do not confuse it with the upward-pointing triangular warning signs.

Explanation written by the My Driving Test editorial team using the Department of Transport Traffic Signs Manual conventions and the RSA Rules of the Road.
