Penalty points are recorded against your Irish driving licence on the National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF). Reaching the points threshold triggers a mandatory 6-month disqualification — and for learner and novice drivers, that threshold is strictly lower.

How to check your penalty points balance
Due to privacy laws, points cannot be viewed on a public web page. To check your active points and receive an official Driver Statement, contact the Department of Transport in Shannon:
Send an email with your full name, 9-digit Irish driver number, date of birth, and PPS number. Your official statement will be posted to your registered address.
