Driving test routes are not official scripts

The examiner gives directions during the test and can vary the roads used. Independent route apps cannot promise the exact examination route. Their value is structured practice on the road types and decision points around your selected centre.

Choose the centre before planning route practice

Start with the centre you have booked or genuinely expect to use. Compare waiting time and pass-rate context, then check whether the app has practice-route coverage for that location.

Read the route profile before driving

A route summary should tell you what kind of practice session you are starting.

• Roundabout count and likely lane-selection workload.
• Turn density and repeated mirror-signal-position decisions.
• Residential, secondary or mixed-road environment.
• Sharp-turn and higher-attention sections.

First drive: navigation and road reading

On the first run, learn the broad road environment without chasing a perfect drive. Identify complex junctions, speed changes, parked-car situations, lane transitions and places where visibility changes.

Second drive: observation and position

Repeat the route with mirrors, blind spots, safe clearance and lane position as the only scored habits. Ask the accompanying driver to record recurring patterns rather than commenting continuously.

Third drive: progress and recovery

Use the final run to practise moving when safe, slowing early for uncertainty and recovering calmly after a stall, missed direction or imperfect manoeuvre. This produces a skill that transfers when the real route changes.

Do not let navigation reduce safety

Set up the route before moving and use voice guidance. A legally qualified accompanying driver must still supervise the learner. If an instruction conflicts with road signs, markings, closures or safety, ignore the instruction and follow the road.
